Pulmonary Medicine is the branch of medicine that deals with diseases of the lungs and respiratory system. It is mainly concerned with the anatomy, physiology, and pathology of the lungs.

Chest infections affect the lungs and can be caused by a viral or bacterial infection. Chest infections are very common and can affect people of all ages and they can be mild, moderate, or severe. The two most common types of chest infections are bronchitis and pneumonia.

Chest infection is caught by inhaling the respiratory droplets released into the air from an infected person or coming into contact with a contaminated surface containing the bacteria or virus. The main symptoms are chesty cough, breathing difficulties, chest pain or discomfort, fever, unexplained weight loss, lumps in the neck. Diagnosis involves producing a chest radiograph, microscopic examination of phlegm sample and blood tests. The use of antibiotics is only recommended in case of severe chest infection.
