A psychiatric disorder is a mental illness characterized by clinically significant disturbance in an individual’s cognition, emotion regulation, or behavior that reflects a dysfunction in the psychological, biological, or developmental processes underlying mental function. The most frequent disorders observed are depression, bipolar disorders, schizophrenia, anxiety disorders and addictions. A variety of biological, psychological, and environmental factors can contribute to the development or progression of mental disorders. Understanding the biological causes of mental illness and the recent findings in genetics and genomics, neurobiology, cognitive neuroscience, neuroimaging and pharmacology have led to the development of new therapies to people suffering from mental illness.
