Blesson Chellakkan Selvanesan, M.Phil., Ph.D., is an Assistant Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology in the Division of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility at Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, Texas.
He obtained his Ph.D. from Central Drug Research Institute and Jawaharlal Nehru University, India in the field of Reproductive Endocrinology and Drug Development. He received the prestigious Guest Scholarship from Swedish Institute and moved to Karolinska Institute, Stockholm, Sweden for his post-doctoral fellowship. He further pursued postdoctoral fellowships at University of Texas Medical Branch, Galveston and Baylor College of Medicine, Houston.
His main areas of research are Reproductive Endocrinology, Developmental Programming of metabolic disorders such as PCOS, Diabetes and Hypertension and its implication in oocyte quality and early embryo development. He is investigating the roles of hormones and nutrition during early development and its implication in the developmental origin of these adult metabolic diseases. He is currently involved in identifying the role of mitochondria in oocyte quality and early embryo development in lean and obese PCOS using androgenized mouse models. He is also involved in identifying the mechanisms of developmental programming of type II diabetes and sex differences in onset, progression, and severity of the disease. His studies have included investigations on the role of estrogen signaling in leukocytes and expression of prostaglandin receptors during cervical ripening. He has also developed various screening techniques to identify novel selective estrogen receptor modulators (SERMs) and explored their cancer and anti-implantation properties.
He has shared his findings in numerous articles in peer-reviewed journals and in presentations at many national and international scientific meetings. In the role of teacher, he has supervised both undergraduate and graduate students, conducted courses, delivered lectures and co-chaired educational conferences.
His research interest mainly focuses on Reproductive Endocrinology, Developmental Programming of metabolic disorders such as PCOS, Diabetes and Hypertension and its implication in oocyte quality and early embryo development.
