Dr Tong Ming Liu obtained his PhD in genetics from Institute of Hydrobiology, Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2002. From 2006, he led an team to study human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs), focusing gene therapy and cell therapy for cartilage and bone in hMSCs, including comparison of hMSCs from different source, immortalization of hMSCs, screening and identification of novel genes regulating MSC differentiation or quality, gene manipulation of hMSCs, hMSCs from human pluripotent stem cells, modeling of cartilage and bone diseases via iPS, conversion of human fibroblasts into osteoblasts by defined factors or small molecules etc. He supervised three external grants totaling more than 2.5 millions as co-principal supervisor from 2006.
